Today we’ve got Mia of Root Floral Design sharing. She just launched her business this year and had a fun launch party a few weeks ago. I thought it would be fun to see things from her fresh pair of business eyes!
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START?
After graduating college with a degree in Interior Design, I decided to move to Dallas in hopes of finding my “dream” job. As most of us soon find out, those things take a long time to find! I lived there for four years working in the Design Industry and just never felt satisfied with the typical day-to-day office job. I really wanted something fun and different. My husband brought home some flowers for our anniversary from the local flower shop and I fell in love. It was so unique and full of color. I thought to myself… “Well this could be fun!” It stayed in the back of my mind, all while making excuses as to why I was never going to be successful or happy with my career and fighting the fear of actually taking those first steps to something I enjoyed! In November 2011, we got the opportunity to move home and start fresh. Still unsure of myself, I began working for a company that completely changed my way of looking at life and what I was capable of. It was at that moment that I set my fears aside and started focusing on only the positive! From that, Root Floral Design became a reality. It has been the longest year of my life and probably the most emotional, but I have had the BEST support and do not regret any of it! I’m so glad that I have FINALLY found something I love and I’m sure my family is too!
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF THE DAY YOU STARTED YOUR BUSINESS?
Well it hasn’t been very long since this all began, but I would tell myself exactly what I tell myself today, “Be you, and only you, keeping only the positive in your life. Learn and grow from every experience that life brings your way and stay dedicated to what you love. That is the only way you will be successful.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR?
I love being able to make decisions for myself and do things on my own time, although, it can be extremely difficult! 🙂 Also, I like having that one-on-one relationship with my clients. I love to see their reactions and hear their feedback!
LEAST FAVORITE THING?
Keeping myself organized and knowing that I’m the only one responsible if something were to go wrong!
WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE PHONE APPS?
1. Instagram – I love to see artistic ways that people compose their pictures. The colors are usually phenomenal and I can usually draw inspiration from them
2. Square Credit Card Reader – It let’s me accept payments so easily, keeps everything organized, and it even adds the tax for me! That might sound weird, but it really is awesome! 🙂
3. Pandora – Music definitely helps me to focus while working… I don’t know how I would function without it!
ANY BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS?
No books lately, but I have been recently obsessed with this site called, “TED: Ideas Worth Spreading.” The last video I watched, spoke about being vulnerable and facing shame head-on. It is very interesting and I highly suggest it to everyone! Watch it here!
WHAT DOES YOUR DESK LOOK LIKE ON A NORMAL DAY?
My desk is very simple. White lacquered with one drawer. On it I have your basic office items, along with some note cards, envelopes, stickers, and order forms. I try to make sure it is neat and clean before I leave for the day. Next to it I have a 9 drawer unit that holds all of my tools and accessories for the flowers (i.e. tape, wire, stamps, ink, and glue).
WHO ARE THREE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS THAT INSPIRE YOU?
This is such a hard one because I have SO many!
